On 17 June 2022, WTO members finally reached consensus over a new agreement on fisheries subsidies, after over twenty years of hard negotiations to deliver on the globally-agreed Sustainable Development Goal 14.6. The new agreement prohibits certain forms of harmful fisheries subsidies, which are well known to be a key factor in the widespread depletion of the world's fish stocks. It has been claimed to represent a major 'historic' agreement for both ocean sustainability and the WTO. But to what extent is this so?
