The International Economic Law and Policy Working Group is hereby delighted to invite you all to our next event on Monday, 5th December at 14:00 (CET) where we welcome back EUI alumnus Professor Dr. Federico Ortino, Professor of International Economic Law at the Dickson Poon School of Law, King’s College London. Here, he will discuss the ongoing modernisation process of the Energy Charter Treaty and the EU’s role herein. All are welcome to join in this open discussion on this topical issue.AbstractAfter two years and fifteen negotiation rounds, in June 2022, the Contracting Parties of the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT) finally reached an agreement in principle on a reform of the treaty. The text was leaked in September 2022 before its future formal adoption in November 2022. The presentation attempts to assess the modernization of the ECT from an EU perspective. It identifies the key objectives of the EU (including reforming the substantive protections provided in the ECT and ensuring Parties' ability to adopt policies addressing climate change) and the extent to which these objectives have been achieved.
