This workshop will focus on discussing the results of the ERC research project "Bodies Across Borders: Oral and Visual Memories in Europe and Beyond".

Mobility across borders and continents has a history that needs to be narrated. The topic implies a multiplicity of trajectories and looking at individual narratives is one possibility for exploring them. The workshop will ask how narrative dynamics and geographical pathways interact with one another. What subjectivities emerge within these processes? How can audio-visual materials relating to narratives of mobility be stored, analysed and presented? Does combining academic, literary, archival and artistic modes of knowledge production allow broader publics to engage with such narratives?

This workshop was born as a crossroads between different intentions: first of all presenting the results of the research project "Bodies Across Borders: Oral and Visual Memories in Europe and Beyond", funded by the European Research Council and based at the Department of History and Civilization, European University Institute, Florence, 2013-2018; secondly, enlarging the scope of the project towards the diffusion and transmission of these results, not only in the field of education, for teachers and students, but also for cultural operators in various fields and for the general public. Therefore, the workshop involves both former members of the ERC BABE project as well as professors and researchers of the EUI’s history department, whose research and activities connect with oral and public history as well as the themes explored by BABE: memory, visuality, corporeality, and mobility in its various senses, of individuals and collectives.

One of the central topics of the workshop will be the archive, understood literally (as the fund created by the BABE project) and metaphorically, as the European and Western cultural archive, put into question by the relationships with the mobile people interviewed by the project. The inspirational role played by the visual arts in the course of the research will be taken into account as one of the epistemological horizons of the project and its results that also comprised exhibitions and testimonies by artists.

Please note that the event will take place at villa Salviati in sala Alcide de Gasperi (HAEU) 9.30-12.30 and in Sala del Consiglio 14.30-17.30.
