Led by the STG Fellows, the talks are a place for informal learning and exchange on global issues affecting different areas of policymaking. Contingency plans and disaster risk preparedness play a critical role in reducing the impact of disasters and in saving lives. Following immediate life-saving responses, tailor-made steps and preventive measures improve social inclusion and support affected communities to resume their lives. With rapid and unplanned urbanisation, depleted ecosystems, environmental degradation, and a changing climate, people and assets are increasingly vulnerable to disasters today. The protracted and complex nature of human-induced crises, coupled with natural hazards and poor governance mechanisms, lead to long-lasting negative impacts on the lives and livelihoods of affected communities. With this STG Talk, three experts with diverse backgrounds will unpack national and international policy responses to natural disasters in Turkey, Syria, Croatia, and Myanmar and highlight the importance of improved response mechanisms that can mitigate the impact of natural hazards.
