Internet of Things and the Law: Legal Strategies for Consumer-Centric Smart Technologies (Routledge 2022) by Professor Guido Noto La Diega is the most comprehensive analysis of the legal issues in the Internet of Things (IoT). For decades now, the increasing significance of the immaterial parts of tangible things has been the subject of legal research. As dematerialisation continues, this book aims to illuminate the opposite movement: rematerialisation, namely, the return of data, knowledge, and power within a physical 'smart' world. This development frames the book’s central question: can the law steer rematerialisation of the IoT in a human-centric and socially just direction? After analysing how existing laws can be interpreted to empower end users, Noto La Diega's book concludes with a call for collective resistance against 'smart' capitalism.Dr Janis Wong will act as discussant.
