Authoritarianism has become the new game in town through its resurgence all around the world. The rise of China and its increasing engagement with the authoritarian regimes brings the question of whether it has a role in increasing autocratisation. Such a question focuses on the external dimension of authoritarianism. However, the literature has a theoretical gap on this matter, and this article aims to fill this gap by providing a theoretical framework for autocracy support and exploring the case of Chinese autocracy support in Serbia. It argues that combinations of leverage and linkage lead to different outcomes for autocracy support and China has an intensive but unintentional and indirect autocracy support in Serbia.
