This event will examine the ethical dimensions related to conducting research on criminalised activities and their actors -- more specifically, irregular migration. We will identify some of the challenges that can emerge prior to entering the field, as well as those emerging in the context of research. We will pay special attention to ethical institutional requirements and hear from a member of the EUI ethics committee about the procedural constraints involved in authorising research on illicit, irregular, or clandestine activities. The session will also reflect on potential risks for the study's participants, especially real cases of irregular migrants, and mitigation strategies to ensure their safety.
