Led by the STG Fellows, the talks are a place for informal learning and exchange on global issues affecting different areas of policymaking. Cities require trillions of US dollars dedicated to adapting and mitigating climate change in order to implement solutions that help avoid a climate disaster. However, cities, especially in the Global South, face enormous difficulties in unlocking resources to finance climate action. The main challenges are a shortage of project preparation capacity, lack of knowledge from the private investors at the subnational level, and the fact that resources are only channeled through the national government. This STG Talk will discuss the above challenges and explore ways to unlock and speed up the flow of green finance to cities, especially in Africa and Latin America. The panelists will also examine financing mechanisms and instruments cities can utilise to mobilise climate finance and involve the private sector and international support. Speakers: Nicolas Azocar Rojel, Policy Leader Fellow (Moderator) Assouhan Jonas Atchade, Fellow in Young African Leader Programme Tuwilika Shaimemanya, Fellow in Young African Leader Programme Elena Evangelidis, Researcher, Department of Law Alejandro Saez, PLF Alumni, Centro de Implementación de Políticas Públicas para la Equidad y el Crecimiento Please note this is an in-person event.
