By looking into EU legal measures in various policy areas, Bin Ye argues that in recent years, EU external economic law has shifted its focus from market openness to economic security. In terms of implementation strategies, the EU differs markedly from the United States. While the US often employs power-based sanctions with deliberate extraterritorial effects to safeguard its national interests, the EU relies on its normative influence to advocate for its standards and values in external economic activities. Despite this difference in approach, it has nevertheless the potential to reshape the relationship with China, one of its largest trading partners, decisively. Based on his research, Bin Ye will discuss how these legislative changes, which extend beyond the scope of existing WTO rules, will offer an analysis of these significant developments in EU external economic relations law from a Chinese perspective, and discuss how this will affect the bilateral relationship between China and the EU in the area of trade and investment.
