The EUI Competition Law Working Group hosts a session with Dr. Friso Bostoen (Tilburg University).
The advent of the digital economy freed creators, from musicians to game developers, by significantly lowering production and distribution costs. Now that the digital economy is maturing, however, it is 're-intermediating'. The previous 'gatekeepers' (e.g., labels, publishers) have not actually disappeared, while an ever-larger series of new intermediaries (e.g., streaming services, app stores) demands a share of the pie. This highly intermediated value chain, with market power at some levels, can leave little reward for creators, whose output may thus be suppressed. This seminar identifies competition issues in creative industries and tries to ideate solutions, which may be found in competition law, related regulation such as the Digital Markets Act, or are entirely different branches of law.
