The Pacific Islands region, strategically crucial yet geopolitically fluid, grapples with transnational risks and power rivalries. Historically, the EU's attention to the Pacific has not matched its rising importance, mainly due to distance. However, the 2021 Strategy for Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific signals the EU's commitment to enhancing regional stability, security, and prosperity. The EU-Pacific relationship, anchored in enduring ties and shared values, expands from development cooperation to governance, the blue economy, climate crisis, and human rights. Pacific nations, aligning with EU interests, see the EU as a valuable partner in addressing multifarious problems and crises. Amid growing geopolitical competition, the EU can be a reliable partner for human development, capacity-building, economic resilience, and limited defence support. Safeguarding the region's natural resources aligns with the EU's commitment to sustainable management and open maritime connectivity. Establishing the EU as a regional actor in Pacific security and defence remains a future challenge. Partners
