We welcome Charles Dallara, former managing director of the Institute of International Finance, to discuss his insights on the negotiations during the European sovereign debt crisis.

Since the beginning of the Greek and Eurozone crisis, the elephant in the room was whether Greece would need to restructure its debts and the repercussions of such a debt restructuring on other countries and on the integrity of the Eurozone. In 2011, this discussion came to a head as the euro came under severe pressure, and there was growing speculation about Greece leaving the Eurozone, potentially leading to an unravelling of the common currency.

Join us in discussing the inside story of the negotiations during this period that led to the unprecedented restructuring of Greece’s debt in 2012 - billed as "the biggest sovereign restructuring in history - with Charles Dallara who led the negotiations from the side of the banks.

Charles Dallara was managing director of the Institute of International Finance from 1993 to 2013. He oversaw the growth of the institute from its roots as an informal group of predominantly US and Japanese commercial banks that negotiated Latin American debt restructurings to a global trade association for close to 500 financial firms. Dallara led the IIF in its prominent role during the European sovereign debt crisis, including the private sector involvement (PSI) agreement between European countries, financial organisations and the Greek government. He previously held positions in the US government, including as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury and was US Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund. Dallara is currently Chairman of Partners Group Board of Directors.

The event will take place in hybrid format at the STG premises in Palazzo Buontalenti. All are welcome to attend. Please register, indicating whether you intend to attend online or in person.
