We welcome Alexis Papahelas, a leading Greek journalist, to engage in a conversation on the evolving role of media in the digital era, especially in the context of the impact of crises on democracy.

The Florence School of Transnational Governance welcomes Alexis Papahelas, a leading Greek journalist, to discuss media, crises and democracy. Drawing on his long and distinguished experience from investigating and covering multiple crises in Greece, Europe and the world, he will engage in a conversation with the STG and broader EUI community on the evolving role of media in the digital era, especially in the context of the impact of crises on democracy. The discussion will cover issues of disinformation, disintermediation and trust, and the role of traditional vs. new and alternative media channels in today’s fragile democracies.

Alexis Papahelas is a Greek investigative journalist and the Executive editor of the leading Greek newspaper Kathimerini. During his long career in journalism, he created the best-known investigative programmes on Greek TV, and for many years has produced and presented documentaries and interviewed prominent international personalities, including Bill Gates, Presidents Obama and Clinton, President Erdogan, President Assad, Yasser Arafat, Prime Minister Netanyahu and many others. He has written a number of books, including one dealing with the US involvement in Greek politics in the 1960’s, and another on the 17 November terrorist organisation. Alexis Papahelas studied economics and history at Bard College and earned a master's degree in journalism and international relations from Columbia University in New York.

The event will take place in hybrid format at the STG premises in Palazzo Buontalenti. All are welcome to attend. Please register, indicating whether you intend to attend online or in person.
