2024 Distinguished Giorgio La Pira Lecture

Sir Mohammed Ibrahim, Founder and Chair of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, will deliver the third Distinguished Giorgio La Pira lecture at the Florence School of Transnational Governance EUI. A joint initiative with Fondazione CR Firenze, the lecture is about building bridges between Europe and other continents.

The Florence School of Transnational Governance is delighted to welcome Sir Ibrahim, Founder and Chair of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, whose keynote speech will focus on the relationship between Africa and Europe. Sir Ibrahim’s intervention will cover a range of topics, including his views on Africa’s challenges and opportunities, governance and leadership, climate change, financing and the state and direction of Africa-EU relations. The event will be opened by EUI President Professor Patrizia Nanz and Mrs Maria Oliva Scaramauzzi (Vice-President of the Fondazione CR). In addition to Sir Ibrahim’s intervention, the event will serve as an occasion for a dialogue with a panel from the STG community, as well as welcoming questions from the broader EUI community and the public. 

The event will be the third instalment of the Giorgio La Pira Lecture, following the previous editions with Nobel Peace Laureate Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (on the importance of international cooperation in addressing global challenges) and former Italian Prime Minister and Former European Commission President Romano Prodi (whose speech focused on China and the United States, and how the European Union positions itself between these two superpowers). 

The lecture is named after Giorgio La Pira, the visionary mayor of Florence, advocate for peace, social justice and dialogue among civilisations.

The event will be held in the Elinor Ostrom room at Palazzo Buontalenti, the premises of the Florence School of Transnational Governance, EUI. All are welcome to attend. Please register, indicating if you will attend in person or online.
