The STG Talks, held weekly at the Florence School of Transnational Governance, serve as a space for discussion for the entire EUI community. Led by the Policy Leader Fellows, the Talks are a place for informal learning and exchange on global issues affecting different areas of policymaking.

The net zero transformation is one of the greatest transnational challenges of our time. While many nation states have agreed to net zero targets at the global level, implementation of policy to meet such targets must happen at the national level. This will require systems change across several sectors of the economy.

Two sectors that interact and have the capacity to significantly reduce global emissions are energy and transport, through electric mobility - including electric vehicles. While 40 million electric vehicles were registered globally in 2023, according to the International Energy Agency, their uptake varies considerably across countries and is linked to national policy frameworks and developments at the regional and city level.

This STG Talk will discuss the key role that governments can play in driving the net zero transformation through policy and regulation. During the talk, Policy Leader Fellow Antara Mascarenhas will draw on case studies in the area of electric vehicles - including Norway and China - that demonstrate how governments can create a positive 'tipping point' for change in both developed and emerging market and developing economies.

The discussion and Q&A, with Nicolo Rossetto and James Kneebone, will initiate a conversation towards development of a blueprint for governments to implement greater electric mobility on the path to decarbonisation.
