During this event, Max Weber Fellow Joyce De Coninck will present her book 'The EU's human rights responsibility gap'. This publication addresses pressing questions, offering a transversal analysis of the applicable legal frameworks under international and EU law. The book first analyses the international and EU human rights responsibility frameworks, revealing both normative and liability incongruence. The EU’s human rights responsibility regime is then applied to specific examples within the four tiers of the EU’s integrated border management, highlighting critical points where responsibility falters. Building on these findings, and drawing from shared responsibility and relationality theories, the final part of the book briefly introduces the model of relational human rights responsibility as an alternative method to establishing human rights responsibility of the EU specifically, and of international organisations more broadly.
