Over the course of fifty years, the radical right in Israel has moved from a situation of absolute marginality in the society, politics, and culture of the country to one of absolute centrality as it became decisive in supporting the successive coalitions that have succeeded one another in government, especially in the last fifteen years. From a grassroots movement in the 1970s, it has now become a governmental actor. This radical right is often violent, religious, and maximalist from a territorial perspective. During these very same fifty years, the State and its institutions have experienced a gradual weakening in their ability to resist the demands of these movements. In this discussion, Marcella Simoni will outline the trajectory of this inverse power relationship between the radical right and the State in Israel over this long period. She will also focus on the representation of the former on various media: among them printed press, some films, and literature.
