In the last two decades much of the scholarly attention has fallen on Central and Eastern Europe’s contacts with the non-European world. A number of notable research projects conducted over the years brought to light not only new material, but also challenged simplistic narratives and experimented with a wide range of methodological approaches. The stranglehold of political and diplomatic history has been broken for the sake of social, cultural, and global histories, while multiple archival findings provided grain to previously generalised pictures. Moreover, as of 2024, we can see a elements of institutionalization, whole research centres such as in Vienna and Prague among others, have developed platforms for studying the complexity of Central Europeans’ interactions with non-European partners particularly during the communist/Cold war period.
Building upon this important contributions, this workshop will provide space for younger generation scholars and PhD researchers to present as well as discuss their most recent studies, findings, and publications. We are very pleased to invite a number of presenters from the centers of research in global and Central Eastern European history as well as researchers and scholars from the EUI History Department.
The EUI Widening Europe Programme initiative, backed by contributions from the European Union and EUI Contracting States, is designed to strengthen internationalisation, competitiveness, and quality in research in Widening countries, and thus foster a more cohesive European Higher Education and Research area.
