This event will analyze the critical relationship between media freedom and democratic resilience, with a particular focus on Europe. Panelists will present research on the state of the media and its vital role in democratic state-building, exploring how media control can serve as a tool for authoritarian consolidation. Speakers will build on the case of Hungary with the benefit of hands on journalistic experiences in the democratic backsliding country, offering insights into how its leadership successfully curtailed media independence to solidify power. The discussion will draw lessons for safeguarding against similar authoritarian tactics in other European democracies, exploring strategies for "dictatorproofing" fragile political systems and reinforcing democratic norms across the continent. This initiative is funded by the EUI Widening Europe Programme. The EUI Widening Europe Programme initiative, backed by contributions from the European Union and EUI Contracting States, is designed to strengthen internationalisation, competitiveness and quality in research in Widening Countries, and thus foster a more cohesive European Higher Education and Research Area.
