Led by the Policy Leader Fellows, the Talks are a place for informal learning and exchange on global issues affecting different areas of policymaking. Are existing policies and practices in response to forced migration crises effective in enabling displaced people to overcome the exceptional situations they are experiencing? How do forced migrants see and define themselves and how would they want to ‘solve’ their situation? Today, a refugee lives in exile for an average of 20 years, and of 10 years for someone displaced within their own country. As the number of people forced to flee remains high due to conflicts and natural disasters, systems governing forced migration crises have sought to reform over time, with some significant efforts to bring about change in the last decade. During this STG talk, we will reflect with experienced academics and practitioners on the learning that can be drawn from the perspectives and experiences of forced migrants and receiving communities’, and from their interaction with the system governing humanitarian and displacement crises. The discussion will invite panelists to reflect on discrepancies between the views of communities directly impacted by displacement and those of Governments, through governance and response systems. Participants will be invited to collaborate in shaping recommendations on possible way forwards for research areas and for policy changes.
