Focusing on the Polish case, Anna Wojciuk (University of Warsaw, Fernand Braudel Fellow at the EUI) and Tomasz Pawluszko (University of Opole) study the emergence of popular geopolitical narratives, disseminated by new types of actors, recruiting from outside of traditional elites. The case of Poland is critical because, due to the country’s security dependence on the United States, even right-wing populist politicians have been significantly constrained in their security discourses. The authors find out that, in this setup, popular geopolitics facilitated the bottom-up, "grassroots" voicing of the typical right-wing populist pro-Chinese and pro-Russian messages. We conclude the article by studying how traditional elites (practitioners, academia and media) and the "people" (netizens) reacted to this phenomenon. The Zoom link will be shared upon registration.
