Markus Stein’s film 'Baldiga - Unlocked Heart' draws on the extensive personal archive of Jürgen Baldiga, a German artist who died of AIDS in 1993. Baldiga’s archive and photographs are probably the largest body of work documenting the experiences of HIV, AIDS, homosexuality and subculture in West Berlin in the 1980s and 1990s. Through the filmic use of these archival sources, Markus Stein’s work builds a narrative that explores collective HIV-related experiences through intimate and personal traces. Questioning this dialogue between past and present, the conversation will look at the relationship between art and politics and explore the processes of selection, representation and mobilisation in the construction of collective memories. For the full programme please check: Florence Queer Festival.
