The Interwar Histories Working Group will host a panel to examine the historical and ongoing intersections of civil society and military violence, focusing on political violence, weapon circulation, and paramilitary groups.

The encounter between civilian and military realms defined the landscape of the early twentieth century. From major battlegrounds during the World Wars to post-war paramilitary and colonial warfare, the organised exercise of violence engaged civil society in a variety of ways. The intersection of civil society and the military is increasingly relevant today, as the conflicts in Palestine, Syria, Sudan, and Ukraine have proven. In light of this concern, this working group session will host a panel of experts on the history of political violence, weapon circulation, and paramilitary groups. Our objective is to re-examine civilian influence in histories of violence by exploring how the military absorbs external ideas and actors.
