The encounter between civilian and military realms defined the landscape of the early twentieth century. From major battlegrounds during the World Wars to post-war paramilitary and colonial warfare, the organised exercise of violence engaged civil society in a variety of ways. The intersection of civil society and the military is increasingly relevant today, as the conflicts in Palestine, Syria, Sudan, and Ukraine have proven. In light of this concern, this working group session will host a panel of experts on the history of political violence, weapon circulation, and paramilitary groups. Our objective is to re-examine civilian influence in histories of violence by exploring how the military absorbs external ideas and actors. Please register to get a seat in the conference room.
