Insects are responsible for pollinating over 75% of crops across the globe. While it is difficult to put a precise economic value on insect-facilitated food production, it is clear that insects are overwhelmingly important to our future on the planet. We can confidently predict that crop yields would be substantially lower without the presence of insect pollinators. In addition, approximately 80% of wild plants are dependent on insects for pollination.

However, most studies warning of insect declines are based on small data sets and largely come from Europe and North America. Scientists lack good baselines for the population sizes of most insects. We lack the data for a comprehensive global picture of declines in insect populations. Given that the stakes for our own human future are high, can we begin taking action on the basis of partial data through policy changes now?

At the EUI and the Robert Schuman Centre, we are dedicated to removing barriers and providing equal opportunities for everyone. Please indicate your accessibility needs, if any, on the registration form. Alternatively, you can contact the event logistics organiser.
