Join Gabriele Abbondanza and Gorana Grgić as they present their new book on Europe’s growing role in the Indo-Pacific.
The Indo-Pacific is rapidly becoming the world’s new geopolitical and geo-economic epicentre. Yet the evolving role of European actors and the European Union remains notably understudied. In this seminar, the authors will present their new monograph, Europe’s Indo-Pacific Pivot: Navigating New Horizons (Palgrave Macmillan), the first comprehensive study of Europe’s strategic engagement with the Indo-Pacific region.
During this book presentation, the authors will highlight the book’s four core themes. First, the Indo-Pacific’s significance and its diverse conceptualisations, which range from narrow, security-focused visions to broader ones. Second, the volume’s ten case studies: France, the UK, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Ireland, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Sweden, and the EU - along with brief insights into other countries that are beginning to approach this macro-region. Third, an assessment of commonalities and differences, cross-regional cooperation – including drivers and obstacles – advantages and risks of this European endeavour. Finally, the authors will explore current crossroads and future outlooks, which also comprise the influence exerted by potential developments in US and Chinese foreign policy. By tracing the evolution of Europe’s growing Indo-Pacific engagement, as well as its significance, this book aims to provide a timely and research-driven compass for scholars, diplomats, and policymakers alike.
