Join this seminar to explore how Asia’s power trajectory is shaped by historical legacies and future geopolitical and technological challenges.

While all states will be affected by new power dynamics driven primarily by the AI revolution, Asia’s major players will arguably face the greatest challenges. This is because the era of 'Meiji Asia' — the harnessing of hard power that began in Japan in 1868 with the Meiji Restoration (‘Rich Country, Strong Army’) and eventually spread throughout the region — is coming to an end. This does not mean that hard power will no longer matter in Asia; it will remain crucial. However, as Asia undergoes major demographic, economic, security, and technological transitions, particularly in its more advanced economies, its capacity to generate power will face significant constraints. Moreover, its ability to manage multiple simultaneous crises will be tested as never before. The region may have to move beyond the traditional paradigm of 'Rich Country, Strong Army', as these goals have largely been achieved. Asia is powerful, so what comes next?

At the EUI and the Robert Schuman Centre, we are dedicated to removing barriers and providing equal opportunities for everyone. Please indicate in the registration form your accessibility needs, if any. Alternatively, you can contact the logistics organiser of the event.
