This event features an open lecture with former BBC journalist Laura Shields on public speaking.
In a public landscape where expertise is under pressure and institutions are easily politicised, knowing how to speak clearly is now part of the job. The lecture is designed for EUI academics who are increasingly asked to speak beyond their immediate field, in panels, podcasts, media interviews or policy briefings. It offers practical tools to help researchers clarify their message, adapt to different formats, and communicate with credibility in a public landscape where expertise is often questioned. The focus is on structure, tone and delivery with examples grounded in the kinds of work done at the EUI.
The session will be led by Laura Shields, a former BBC, CNN and CNBC journalist and the founder of Red Thread EU, a Brussels-based media and public speaking training agency. Laura has trained EU Commissioners, Prime Ministers, CEOs and public policy experts. She regularly works with institutions such as Bruegel, the Think Tank Lab, and NATO. Laura is also a visiting lecturer on the European Affairs and European Public Affairs MA programmes at Maastricht University. Her approach is grounded in journalism, public speaking and tailored for experts who need to communicate with clarity under pressure.
This open lecture is organised by the Communications Service as part of a series of initiatives to offer EUI academics the tools and training to communicate with confidence beyond academia.
