Looking at the slowly growing field of research on migration and sexuality in Germany since the 1960s, the talk explores how bi-cultural couples navigated diversity. Conceptually, it sketches a range of options that unfold between the femo-nationalist assumption that ‘the other’ is dangerous and the multi-culturalist assurance that difference enriches loving relationships. Considering media representations and biographical trajectories, the paper argues that historians need to take regional and global mobilities into account if they want to understand how intimate patterns and practices changed across time.
