The Digital Markets Act (DMA) seeks to harmonise digital markets in the EU by promoting contestability and fairness. Its enforcement relies on a quasi-centralised system, with the European Commission as the main authority and national competition authorities in a supporting role. The DMA complements EU competition law, national regimes, and merger control, while preventing Member States from passing overlapping rules. Although no transposition is required, several states have adopted laws specifying enforcement structures. These national deviations risk weakening the DMA’s effectiveness and undermining its centralised enforcement model.
