Where and how does power operate in the governance of international migration?

Migrants and refugees are increasingly instrumentalised for strategic purposes in international politics, yet scholarship on this issue has not fully engaged with the central International Relations concept of power.

In this one-day workshop, we will examine how the European Union engages with international migration as a site of power.

Building on the International Affairs article Understanding Migration Power in International Studies, this workshop invites papers that critically apply the framework of migration power to the European Union and its member states. This conceptual approach identifies four interrelated modalities through which power operates in, through, and against migration: compulsory, institutional, structural, and productive.

Contributions for the call for papers are welcome. If interested, please submit your abstract by 15 November.
