Our first reading will be Julie E. Cohen’s Between Truth and Power: The Legal Constructions of Informational Capitalism (available online through the EUI Library).Julie E. Cohen is the Mark Claster Mamolen Professor of Law and Technology at the Georgetown University Law Center. She teaches and writes about surveillance, privacy and data protection, intellectual property, information platforms, and the ways that networked information and communication technologies are reshaping legal institutions. In Between Truth and Power, published by Oxford University Press in 2019, the author:offers a comprehensive and in-depth exploration of how law and information technology remake each other;explores developments and questions from both private and public law, identifying deep-level factors common to both areas of scholarly emphasis;provides an interdisciplinary methodology that integrates perspectives from law, political economy, communications studies, and STS.The discussion will focus on the Introduction (Transforming Institutions) and Chapter 1 (Everything Old Is New Again – Or Is It?), and will be supported by Prof. Thomas Streinz.
