In the framework of the Swiss Chair Seminar Series, this session features a talk by Raslan Ibrahim (SUNY GENESEO & IHEID)

This research examines how practices of sovereignty in the Arab state system have evolved from its emergence after World War I to the present. It also analyses both the similarities and differences between sovereignty practices in the Arab state system and those of international society more broadly. The study develops an analytical framework of sovereignty that integrates insights from social constructivism, the English School, social practices, and role theory. It concludes by highlighting the broader implications of this study for IR debates on sovereignty, international society, Global IR, and the international relations of the Middle East.

Raslan Ibrahim is an Associate Professor of International Relations and Political Science at the State University of New York at Geneseo (SUNY Geneseo) and a Visiting Research Fellow at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (IHEID) in Geneva. He has taught at Haverford College, the University of Denver, the University of Colorado Denver, Charles University, and the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro. His research focuses on international relations theory, sovereignty, conflict resolution, human rights, and regional organisations in the Middle East. In addition to his academic work, he previously worked as a correspondent for BBC Arabic, covering Israeli and Palestinian affairs.
