Join this first roundtable addressing important questions about the relationship between academia and communication of social science research.

The media landscape is changing fast and leads to a proliferation of (mis-)information sources that tends to drown out scholarly expertise. In this situation, social scientists are expected to engage with external audiences and communicate their evidence to the wider public. However, this is easier said than done. If academic research on the fractured nature of audiences and a post-truth world of social media has some weight of evidence on its side, academics may have to (re-)learn how to communicate social science research. This also requires a better understanding of what divides audiences – or brings them together, be it in agreement or respectful disagreement.

In its first roundtable, the ‘Social science communication in post-truth democracy?’ initiative will bring together experts on the communication of social science research to different audiences: Catherine de Vries (Bocconi University, International European University), Joanna Bryson (Hertie School), Martin Ruhs (Migration Policy Centre, RSC-EUI), and Gaby Umbach (Global Governance Programme, RSC-EUI), to answer the pressing question: what do we know about the communication of social science, how should we do it, and what changes in the public sphere should we be aware of?

At the EUI and the Robert Schuman Centre, we are dedicated to removing barriers and providing equal opportunities for everyone. Please indicate in the registration form your accessibility needs, if any. Alternatively, you can contact the logistics organiser of the event.
