This closing conference of the ERC-funded SOCIOBORD project explores the relationship between welfare, borders, and state-building in twentieth-century Europe. Bringing together scholars working on borderlands across the Upper Adriatic, Galician, and Franco-Belgian-Luxenbourgish borderlands, the project examines how welfare systems, social policies, and public institutions were shaped by shifting political regimes, territorial transformations, and transnational exchanges in borderland regions. Our research contributes to a broader understanding of how mixed economies of welfare emerged and evolved in border regions, challenging nation-centred approaches to the history of welfare and social citizenship.
