The Constitutional Law and Politics Working Group and the European Union Law Working Group are organising a discussion with Advocate General Tamara Ćapeta (Court of Justice of the European Union).

This seminar aims to explore the extent to which the Court of Justice of the European Union is positioned to defend the EU’s foundational values, such as democracy, the rule of law, and human rights, at both the EU and Member State level. Advocate General Ćapeta will open the seminar with a keynote address, reflecting on the broader implications of her recent opinions and the Court’s judgements in fundamental cases, such as C-769/22 Commission v Hungary (Valeurs de l’Union) (find the judgement here and the AG opinion here); or C‑555/24 P Medel (find the AG opinion here).

These examples will provide participants with a tangible entry point into understanding how the Court operationalises EU values in its recent case law. By bringing together perspectives from within and outside the CJEU, the seminar aims to deepen our understanding of the Court’s potential (and its constraints) in protecting EU values.

All interested fellows, PhD researchers, professors and visiting academics are invited to participate.

The Zoom link and further material will be shared with participants upon registration.
