This is the fourth event organised as part of the ‘Histories and Theories of the State’ series, co-sponsored by the Political History Working Group and the Diplomatic/International History Working Group. The event is organised by Mart van der Wal and Jochem Rinsma. The series is organised by Antonina Januszkiewicz and Jochem Rinsma.

‘Histories and Theories of the State’ has the pleasure and privilege of inviting you to a special guest discussion on ‘Territory and the State’ on Tuesday, 3 March at 17:00 in Sala del Camino, at Villa Salviati. The event will host Dr Stuart Elden, Professor of Political Theory and Geography at the University of Warwick and currently a Fernand Braudel Fellow at the EUI.

Prof. Elden's article ‘How Should We Do the History of Territory’ (2013) will be the starting point of a wide-ranging discussion on territory. The session will focus on (i) the use of conceptual history to study the state and (ii) the role of territory within this history as it relates to the state.

This will tie in with prior readings of Foucault’s lectures from Security, Territory, Population, as well as with his older work on territory, especially his monograph The Birth of Territory from 2013. Knowledge of these latter texts however is not at all required.
