This event explores how environmental struggles have been shaped by violence, labour, and activism, from Portugal’s ricescapes to global youth movements of the early 1990s

This event brings together two perspectives on the historical entanglements of environment, power, and resistance. The contributions trace how environmental struggles emerge across very different settings, from cultivated wetlands to transnational activist networks, and highlight the ways people have confronted ecological injustice through action, endurance, and collective engagement.

Elisa Lopes da Silva (visiting fellow, EUI): Wetlands, weeds and weeders: a history of violence and resistence in Portugal's ricescapes

Senta Terner (EUI): United in Pain – Global Youth Environmental Activism in the early 1990s
