Part of CIVICA’s Meet the European Culture series, this webinar explores the historical and artistic significance of Palazzo Buontalenti, now part of the EUI and home to the Florence School of Transnational Governance. A 20-minute video will be screened and discussed by art historian Laura Bechi, followed by a Q&A.

About the video

This special contribution from the Italian cultural association 'Passeggiate nella Storia' takes viewers inside Palazzo Buontalenti, today part of the European University Institute (EUI) and home to the Florence School of Transnational Governance (STG).

In this episode, the historic palace becomes the setting for a journey through time. Along the walk through its rooms and architectural spaces, the story of Palazzo Buontalenti is told with the participation of EUI staff members.

Built in the late 16th century and traditionally attributed to architect Bernardo Buontalenti, the palace reflects the ingenuity and artistic ambition of its time. Over the centuries, it has fulfilled many functions, evolving alongside the city of Florence while retaining its historical character.

The episode explores how the palace’s history is closely intertwined with that of the Medici family, whose political power and cultural patronage shaped Florence and left a lasting mark on its architecture and institutions.

Today, as part of the EUI, the palace continues to be a place of learning, research, and international dialogue. Hosting the Florence STG, it connects its rich historical past with contemporary debates on governance, policy, and global challenges.

The webinar will be held in a hybrid format and is open to all members of the CIVICA partner universities upon registration (deadline: 27 April 2026, 16:00 CEST). Registered participants will receive the access link by email.
