Celebrating 20 years of ECA research support at the Historical Archives of the European Union, this anniversary workshop brings together former ECA–EUI Research Grant holders, archivists, academics and practitioners to reflect on two decades of research into European public finances and accountability. With perspectives from history, political science, economics and public audit, the workshop aims to consider how research and past experience can inform future reforms and research agendas.
For two decades, the ECA–EUI Research Grants have supported original research on the evolution of European public finances and accountability through the unique archival resources of the Historical Archives of the European Union. This anniversary workshop brings together former grant holders, who are now established scholars in the field, alongside archivists and practitioners to reflect on how research on EU public finance and accountability has evolved and how it can respond to emerging challenges in EU action and governance.
The event will explore the historical foundations, major turning points, and future trajectories of EU public finance, addressing key questions related to audit, fiscal governance, EU‑level borrowing, and the financing of European public goods. Through an interdisciplinary dialogue between history, political science, economics, and public audit, participants will examine how past experience can inform future reforms and research agendas.
The programme features presentations by former recipients of the ECA–EUI Research Grants, whose research work has contributed to shaping the field over the past twenty years. Their presentations will be complemented by discussions with distinguished professors and practitioners, ensuring a rich and multi‑perspective debate on the evolution and future of EU finances.
