This lecture with Dr Thomas Bagger, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Italian Republic and to the Republic of San Marino, will explore the strategic role of Italian‑German cooperation in shaping Europe’s future at a critical moment for the Union.

The year 2026 represents a critical juncture for the European Union, marked by profound geopolitical, economic, and societal challenges. This lecture explores how Italy and Germany, drawing on their distinct yet complementary strengths, can play a decisive role in reinforcing Europe’s unity, resilience, and strategic autonomy. By examining key areas of cooperation, the lecture highlights how renewed Italian‑German leadership can act as a catalyst for a stronger, more cohesive Europe. Framing 2026 as a year of opportunity, it highlights the strategic choices that will shape Europe’s capacity to act in an increasingly complex international environment.

The lecture is moderated by Prof. Angelo Panebianco, Emeritus Professor of International Relations at the University of Bologna.

The event will take place in person only at the EUI premises in the Refectory, Badia Fiesolana.

All are welcome to attend.
