The EUI Economics Department hosts the third edition of its Summer School 'The Core'.
Programme description:
The Summer School prepares students for the rigorous training in the core of PhD programmes in Economics. The school is tailored to provide the students with an in-depth understanding of the fundamental background material that is covered in most programmes. To some, this information will be entirely new; to others, it will be in need of being refreshed. Nevertheless, the Summer School is structured to ease the transition into the core of PhD training in Economics.
The programme will consist of four courses taught over the five days. These are: (i) Mathematical Economics, (ii) Microeconomics, (iii) Macroeconomics and (iv) Statistics and Econometrics. The courses will be complemented with sessions to review both the lecture material and assignments. Some of the assignments will cover the introduction and use of computational tools.
The breakdown of each day consists of four sessions of 1.5 hours, with breaks throughout the day. Along with faculty supervision, these courses will be taught by our own PhD students, who are highly advanced and have served as teaching assistants throughout their time in the Department of Economics.
Learning outcomes:
The goal of the summer programme is to better prepare students to enter a PhD programme in economics. By the end of the week, students should be more acquainted with the basic tools of mathematical economics and statistics and be able to apply them to solve microeconomic and macroeconomic problems.
Who should attend:
This programme is tailored to cater to the requirements of students who are gearing up to begin their PhD studies in Economics this fall. Additionally, it serves as valuable preparation for students who are considering applying to a PhD programme in Economics in the upcoming year, providing them with additional training that complements their coursework.

Interested candidates are invited to complete the registration form and respond to all required questions by 1 June 2026. Successful applicants will be notified directly.
This activity is funded by the EUI Widening Europe Programme. The EUI Widening Europe Programme initiative, backed by contributions from the European Union and EUI Contracting States, is designed to strengthen internationalisation, competitiveness and quality in research in Widening Countries, and thus foster a more cohesive European Higher Education and Research Area.
The Summer School is free of charge, and all selected participants from Widening countries are eligible for financial support to cover their travel and accommodation expenses. To qualify for this support, participants must both be nationals of and currently enrolled at a university in a Widening country.

Inside the European Union: Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia.
Outside the European Union: Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo(1), Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Moldova, and Ukraine.
