Workshop on Austro-Hungarian economic history with Gábor Egry

In this workshop, Gábor Egry will present ongoing research on his concept of „Austro-Hungarian economic space , describing embedded economic relationships defined by and operated through personal interactions. Egry’s account of the economic space focuses on the interactions among Austro-Hungarian business entities as they sought to establish dominance in Southeastern Europe and beyond. Highlighting these interactions foregrounds the necessary local embedding of economic space and reveals the limits of both political and economic imperialism.

Gábor Egry is the Chief Director of the Institute of Political History in Budapest. Egry is a historian whose work focuses on economic history, nationalism, and identity politics in Central Europe. He was the Istvan Deak Visiting Professor at Columbia University and has recently held fellowships at Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin, and IWM Vienna. In 2017, he received an ERC Consolidator grant for the project NEPOSTRANS – Negotiating post-imperial transitions: from remobilization to nation-state consolidation. A comparative study of local and regional transitions in post-Habsburg East and Central Europe.

Registered attendees will receive a draft of an in-progress paper that will serve as the basis for discussion. Please contact the Economic History Working group
