Twenty years after declaring independence, Kosovo remains both a symbol of post-Yugoslav state-building and an unresolved case in European politics.

This workshop examines Kosovo's trajectory from three complementary angles. The first one takes stock of Kosovo's own record two decades on, highlighting institutional consolidation and economic development alongside persistent challenges around the rule of law, non-recognition, and normalisation with Serbia.

The second turns to the wider Western Balkans, exploring how Kosovo's independence has shaped regional politics, with particular attention to Serbian and Bosnian perspectives, including its bearing on secessionist rhetoric in Republika Srpska and Belgrade's continued foreign-policy balancing between East and West. The third perspective situates Kosovo within broader legal and geopolitical debates, considering precedents for self-determination, the fragmented international recognition regime, and Kosovo's position amid renewed great-power competition.

The workshop offers an interdisciplinary reassessment of Kosovo's independence, its contested legacy, and its implications for regional stability and international law.
