The School of Transnational Governance (STG) at the European University Institute (EUI), in collaboration with Lo schermo dell’Arte, is pleased to host on its premises a talk with German artist and film director Julian Rosefeldt on his latest movie, opener of the 19th edition of the contemporary art and cinema festival on November 11.
Cinematic adaptation of Rosefeldt’s 24-channel video installation (2022), the film is set in a dystopian and dissolving New York partly shot in Kyiv a few days before the Russian invasion. Figures at the edge of the economic system crisscross the city marked by consumption.
Around them, Rosefeldt constructs a series of situations suspended between the everyday and the surreal in which the spaces of the city suddenly change function and reality.
The artist uses fragments of text from two thousand years of economic, political, and philosophical thought, performed by marginalized characters. The choral and jazz elements set the pace, helping to build a city suspended between spectacle and decay. Euphoria shows the seductive force of a system that, despite its own contradictions and destructive potential, continues to exert an almost irresistible grip on the present.
With an introduction by STG Executive Director Fabrizio Tassinari, the event – in English - will see Rosefeldt in conversation with director and curator Heinz Peter Schwerfel.
Free admission and open to all. Seats are limited. We encourage early registration, following the creation of an account for externals to the EUI.
