Join an international community to discuss the salient issues of our times.

In the world of politics, corruption and youth often have one thing in common. They are often made invisible. Yet, sometimes, they become visible very suddenly. This is what happened in Novi Sad, New Delhi or Tirana, where the emergence of corruption intersects with the feeling that many political ideas are unheard and many hopes unmet.

A new paradigm emerges: young voices walk the streets, organise in more formal structures and speak to the media across borders, demanding answers. Do these phenomena reveal something deeper about the way in which we do politics today and how we could do it in the future? What are these protesters asking for? How do they move from very specific trigger to more general demands? Do they get what they want?

Join us for an online conversation with activists and democracy analysts to connect the dots and think together about how protests help imagine real change. There will first be contributions by key individuals at the centre of this struggle, followed by an opportunity to ask questions and hold a public debate.

The speakers are:

  • On Serbia’s student movement: Luka Grandić, Student of Graphical Engineering and Design, and activist.
  • On India‘s 'Cockroaches' movement: Professor Shalini Randeria, social anthropologist, rector Emerita Central European University, Vienna and Excellence Chair at the University of Bremen.
  • On the 'Flamingo Revolution' in Albania, Gresa Hasa, Researcher at the Faculty of Law and the Center for Southeast European Studies (CSEES), University of Graz.

On democratic renewal in Europe and beyond:

  • Professor Kalypso Nicolaidis, Chair in Global Affairs and Director of the STG Transnational Democracy Programme, Florence School of Transnational Governance (EUI).
  • Prof. Madeleine de Cock Buning, member of the Democracy27 High Level Task Force and Chair of its Academic Advisory Board; Chair of the EDMO’s Advisory Council and Member of the Advisory Board of WSocial.
  • Co-Hosts: Andrea Gaiba, EUI School of Transnational Governance and Maximilian Fries, Europe Calling.

This is an event organised by the Power to the People initiative, a coalition of academic and civil society actors wishing to make conversations about peoples’ empowerment central to public debates. This session is co-convened by the European University Institute and Europe Calling.

The event is in English with professional interpretation into German.
