In the interwar years, new ideas about Europe and attempts to facilitate cooperation between Europe's empires developed side by side. In his research, Nuri Kurnaz (University of Amsterdam) examines to what extent imperialism as a European endeavour was supported as a master frame idea for European integration within the ranks of the League of Nations and Pan-European Union. With the concepts of imperial exceptionalism and co-imperialism, he explores three case studies: the Italian invasion of Abyssinia, debates about the redistribution of the colonial possessions of smaller states, and the position of Muslim subjects across different empires. His research asks whether imperialism acted as a catalyst for European integration as a shared project among white Christian Europeans, or rather as an obstacle because it reinforced competing national claims to imperial exceptionalism.
