Last week marked another successful edition of ENTraNCE - the European Networking and Training for National Competition Enforcers. The 12th edition took place from 19 to 21 April 2022 at the EUI, which opened its doors to judges from EU member states seeking advanced training and peer learning in EU competition law.

More than 50 judges attended the 2022 edition, reaching the EUI premises in the Florentine hills or connecting online.

A training tailored for judges dealing with competition law enforcement

ENTraNCE is a training course on EU competition law enforcement addressed to European national magistrates, organised by the Florence Competition Programme and co-financed by the European Commission - Directorate-General for Competition. Since the first edition in 2011, more than 400 selected judges from the EU member states and neighbouring countries took part in the training, deepening their knowledge of EU competition law and economics and sharing their experiences with their peers.

The Training Structure

ENTraNCE has two key activities. Early in the year, selected judges meet at the EUI for three days of lectures by leading competition law scholars. After the residential training, each judge submits a short commentary – a so-called case note – on a judgement of his domestic jurisdiction dealing with competition law. Then, in Autumn, the participants present their case notes to their peers and academic discussants at the final workshop hosted at the EUI. Lastly, the ENTraNCE project team reviews the case notes and publishes them in a Robert Schuman Centre Working Paper.

The 2022 Edition: Recent Developments in the Application of Art. 101 TFEU

The 12th edition of ENTraNCE focused on the recent developments in the application of the Article 101 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU). Art. 101 TFEU prohibits any agreements or cartels between Member States that could disrupt free competition within the internal market. After a preliminary analysis of the scope of application of EU competition law, the training focused on the prohibition of anti-competitive agreements, and the recent revisions of the Block Exemption Regulations by the European Commission.

The FCP team is already working on the final workshop of ENTraNCE 2022 that will take place at the premises of the Court of Justice of the EU in Luxembourg. During the final workshop the participants will present their case notes on recent competition law decisions from their jurisdiction and discuss them with leading academics and CJEU judges.
