Dr Cartabia was Judge of the Italian Constitutional Court from 2011 to 2020, Vice President of the Court from 2014 to 2019 and the first woman to be elected President of the Court in 2019, where she held office until 2020. Since 2017, she is a substitute member for Italy of the European Commission for Democracy through Law of the Council of Europe (otherwise known as the Venice Commission).
The Italian jurist obtained her PhD from the European University Institute in 1993 and has maintained a strong relationship with the Institute throughout the years. In 2016, she took part in the EUI’s The State of the Union Conference on ‘Women in the World’, where she spoke on women in leadership.
Dr Cartabia has been a Visiting Professor in universities across Europe and the USA, as well as a distinguished lecturer for the EUI's Academy of European Law’s Summer School on European Union Law and a full professor of Constitutional Law at the Bocconi Department of Legal Studies.
