EUI Widening Europe Programme announces funded research visits for PhD students

The EUI Widening Europe Programme continues to support research visits for PhD students enrolled at higher education institutions or public research centres in eligible targeted Widening countries.

The EUI Widening Europe Programme invites PhD researchers from targeted Widening countries to apply for a funded research visit at the European University Institute (EUI).

This special call offers selected candidates the opportunity to spend the autumn term of the 2026–2027 academic year at the EUI, joining one of the following departments:

During their stay, visiting researchers will work closely with EUI faculty members, advance their doctoral research, and take part in the academic life of the Institute.

 

Eligibility

Candidates must be enrolled in a PhD programme in one of the targeted Widening countries and hold nationality from one of the countries listed below:

Inside the European Union: Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia.

Outside the European Union: Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo*, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Ukraine.

* This designation is without prejudice to positions on status, and is in line with UNSCR 1244 (1999) and the ICJ Opinion on the Kosovo declaration of independence.

This initiative is funded by the EUI Widening Europe Programme. With contributions from the European Union and EUI Contracting States, the programme is designed to strengthen internationalisation, competitiveness, and quality in research in targeted Widening countries, and thus foster more cohesive European Higher Education and Research Areas.
