The Historical Archives of the European Union is saddened to learn of the passing of European Parliament President David Sassoli on 11 January 2022.
Sassoli, a former journalist and politician from Italy, took up his role as European Parliament President in July 2019. He had served as a member of the European Parliament since 2009.
Sassoli is remembered as a profound European, deeply committed to democracy. In her statement on his death, Ursula Von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, stated that 'Our Union loses a passionate European, a sincere democrat, and a good man'.
The Archives extends its deepest condolences to his family and friends for their terrible loss.
